Twin 642 and St Louis 862 at 26th and Mission.

For years, the Muni through routed the 41-Union/South Van Ness from Lyon and Greenwich to 26th and Mission via Howard and S. Van Ness Aves. The southern end of this line was formerly Muni’s “R” trolley coach line, opened with the baby St. Louis’ in 1941 after MSRy lost their Howard St. franchise for the 35 car. The layover was on 26th just east of Mission. Coaches returned downtown via Mission, 25th and S. Van Ness to Howard. The one way street patterns introduced on Howard and Folsom ended this operation and created the southern end of the 12-Folsom motor coach line. See the attached photo from Peter Ehrlich’s collection of a Fageol Twin at the 26th and Mission terminal during BART construction, with an OB 12 line coach passing it. During BART construction, the 9-12-14 trolley coaches used S. Van Ness between 14th and 26th Streets. The overhead exists to use S. Van Ness between 11th and 26th streets today.
