Eastbound Linden and NS railroad tracks. The railroad here was at one time the Cincinnati Lebanon and Northern, later the Pennsylvania then Penn Central, Conrail and is now operated by Norfolk Southern.
The bikepath under the front bumper was Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton (not to be confused with the interurban of the same name), then Baltimore and Ohio's Welston Sub. The NS runs less than once a month to the Delphi, formerly Delco, plant at the current (1988) end of their line in Kettering, the Chessie System abandoned the Welston Sub in 1981. If you look at the pole on the right of the trolleybus you will notice the blue Dayton Corpration Limit sign above the Speed Limit 35 (mph) sign. The city limit and railroad crossings have a lot to do with the Dayton trolleybus system.
Several trolleybus routes stop short of the city limit or a railroad crossing or both. The Rt 4 East turned on Hearthstone a block west of here until 2000 when the trolleybus line was extended. Rt 2 East stops short of crossing the both the B & O and Dayton city limit as does the Rt 5 North (formerly Rt 9). The Rt 9 South was dieselized in part due to crossing both the busy mainlines through Dayton, the Conrail and CSX on the west side of town, and all the delays from trains at those crossings.
Rt 8 South was rerouted to avoid crossing the same busy mainlines on Washington St and now crosses a lightly used industrial track. Sometime later this year Rt 4 West will be extended west on Hoover past Delphos where it stopped short of crossing a B & O branchline that has was abandoned back in the early eighties. May 23, 2010
